'Blame Karma' plot synopsis
Adapted from Laura Norton's novel, Don't Blame Karma is a Mexican romantic comedy directed by Elisa Miller. Follows fashion designer Sarah (Aislinn Derbez) who steals all her luck from her famous sister Lucy (Renata Notney). When Lucy becomes engaged to Sarah's childhood friend and love of her life, Aaron Star (Gil Cerezo), it further convinces Sarah that she is cursed to be forever unhappy.
Why does Sarah think she is cursed?
From a young age, Sarah believed herself to be under the influence of a curse. It started when her sister Lucy turned 5 and Sarah blew out the candles on her cake to steal her birthday wish. Lucy angrily turned on him and vowed to steal all his dreams from that moment on.
After that, Sara never got what she wanted. Lucy grew up to be a rich and famous model and was popular at school. Meanwhile, Sarah moved into her grandmother's old old house and opened a struggling business selling her fashion designs.
Sarah becomes even more convinced of the reality of the curse when Lucy meets her new fiancé, Aaron, Sarah's old friend and lover. Lucy really gets everything Sarah wants.
With Aaron and his sister staying at Sarah's house before the wedding, it's clear that the spark they had in high school never died.
Sarah and Aaron easily rekindle their friendship. He forces her to accept an offer to design for the prestigious Fashion Fest. Sarah falls in love with Aaron again, but he can never betray his sister.
Is Sara marrying Roberto?
Roberto, Sara's boyfriend, surprises her by showing up at her house and telling her he's moving to her town. However, it is clear that the couple has no chemistry.
However, in order to prevent herself and Aaron from getting closer, Sara decides to marry Roberto. But their hasty engagement doesn't last long. Sara panics at the thought and realizes that Roberto wants her gone. They part and leave on good terms.
Is Lucy marrying Aaron?
Lucy and Aaron are still engaged and have only known each other for a few months. But the funny thing is, neither of them seem too happy to be married to the other.
Before the wedding, it is Lucy who pulls Aaron aside to reveal her suspicions to him. Both share with each other that they are not in love.
In the end, it's Sarah and Lucy's parents who get married, not Lucy and Aaron, and they renew their vows.
Did Lucy curse Sarah?
Sarah disagrees, finally confessing to Lucy that she is cursed for not asking for something. She reminds her sister of her birthday party and how she stole all of Sarah's dreams.
But Lucy fixes it. There was one part of the party Sarah didn't remember: Lucy later apologized to her and offered to give back all her wishes. Angry and proud, Sarah rejected his apology.
Lucy then tells Sarah that she is not cursed. Everything that happens or doesn't happen for him is mainly due to his attitude.
This sinks in for Sarah as she realizes that she has to go after Aaron. Of course, if he never goes after something, he will never achieve what he wants.
How does 'Don't Blame Karma' end?
Sara finds Aaron and kisses him, but that's not the end of blaming Karma.
Sara and Lucy totally make up for each other. The sisters go on vacation together to fulfill a wish that never came true for Sarah. The movie ends with them sitting on the beach watching whales in the ocean.
