Stowaway Plot Synopsis
In the thriller Stowaway, Ruby Rose stars as Bella Denton, a young woman who inherits a boat from her father. Because Bella is afraid of water, she's not too thrilled about her inheritance. But when he discovers that the boat is actually a luxury yacht with a jacuzzi, he becomes more interested in the sailboat his father left him with.
Not long after boarding a boat with the handsome Michael (Patrick Schwarzenegger), her good days are interrupted by a group of criminals who threaten her life.
Does Bella survive the boat? Or does he end up sleeping with the fishes?
Why is Bella afraid of water?
During the film's opening, we see a flashback scene with Bella's father as a young girl. Their beach excursion takes a tragic turn when Bella nearly drowns in the ocean, hence why Bella is afraid of water. It's believed that his near-death experience also gave him the perfect excuse to skip bath time, but that's just speculation.
How did Bella's father die?
According to Ed Meeser (Frank Grillo), who informed Bella about her father's death, she drowned. But Ed is only telling half the truth. Bella's father, Arthur Denton, appears to have died at the hands of others, but we don't find out who until the end of the film.
Who joins Bella on the yacht?
After meeting Ed, his father's supposed best friend and business partner, he introduces him to Captain Lawson (Luis Da Silva Jr.), who will pilot the yacht if he decides to put it on the water.
He must sign the papers before staying on the boat. It happens the next day, but Bella, a former party girl, sneaks onto the ship the night before with Michael, a young man she picked up at a bar. They enjoy the night together and then fall asleep, unaware that Captain Lawson and two mercenaries (Jim and Sunshine) have entered the yacht after taking out the harbor guard.
Jim and Sunshine want to crack the safe inside the yacht. They think there's $80 million in the safe, so they're eager to get the money as soon as possible.
As they begin to open the safe, Lawson takes the yacht into the water so the theft cannot be discovered.
Do the men find Bella and Michael?
Realizing that the boat is occupied, Michael urges Bella to jump into the water to escape. She refuses because she is afraid of the water, so Michael decides to swim to shore and get help.
Thankfully, the boat was barely moving at this point, so Michael didn't have to swim for miles, but before he got back to land, Jim and Sunshine shot at the boy, presumably killing him.
Bella is now stuck on the yacht and the men realize that she is hiding somewhere on the ship. They search both the lower and upper decks and for some reason open the refrigerator to see if she's there, but they can't find her.
He tries to use his phone to call for help, but surprise surprise, the battery is dead. Finding a way to recharge it, Bella goes to the engine room to use the radio to call for help as she can't get a connection.
Is help coming?
Bella manages to talk to the Coast Guard, but before she can finish her conversation, Sunshine cuts her off (unbeknownst to us, her temperament is far from sunny).
Before he can find her, he runs up the ladder and then runs into Captain Lawson. Since he's not really a bad guy, he gives her the location of the inflatable boat and then tells Sunshine that he didn't see "the guy who got away."
As the men continue to search for her, Bella manages to find a hiding place with an automatic hatch. While he's here, the coast guard comes looking for the boat. Bella wants to call them for help, but is now trapped in the hole where she is hiding. Once outside, the coast guard has left to do another job, and Bella is once again alone on the yacht with the men who want to kill her.
Lawson says he's helping Bella because of her father. It seems that her father has done so much to help her and her family, so she feels it is her duty to help Bella.
He builds a raft so the two can escape, but Bella fights Sunshine before they can get off the yacht. "I won't hurt you," he said before immediately backtracking, but Bella is a decent match.
We're guessing this refers to the prison he was imprisoned for stealing a car when he was young, and not the popular Australian TV show Prisoner Cell Block H, which is unlikely to have been his show of choice as a teenager. !
Sunshine gets the better of Bella, but before she can kill her, Lawson arrives and kills her.
Bella and Lawson then escape on a raft, narrowly escaping being shot by Jim, who is warned to run after hearing Lawson kill Sunshine.
He discovers that he is the leader of a group of mercenaries who killed a warlord. Then they stole the warlord's money, but his father gave the money to people who needed saving.
Jim and Sunshine are ordered to retrieve the rest of the money from the yacht from a mysterious third party. Lawson agreed to help because he needed money for his family.
So Bella goes back to land, right?
While on the raft, he sees another boat in the distance and realizes it's Ed. He thinks it's his ticket back to land, but it turns out he's the one who ordered him on the yacht.
Ed kills Lawson, beats up Bella, and then takes her back to the yacht.
When Bella regains consciousness, Ed tells Bella that he "stole" her father's money! Later, the mercenary tells him that he killed his father in revenge for taking the money.
He wants to know where the money is, and Bella tells him to look at the numbers on the last page of the notebook she found earlier. The last number is zero, and she tells Ed that means her father gave her all the money.
Jim gets mad at Ed for the botched mission and Ed kills him.
Bella runs and Ed chases after her. He finds her on the deck about to jump into the water. Knowing that he is afraid of water, he doesn't think he will jump, but he jumps anyway.
Ed is understandably upset, and even more so when he realizes that Bella has locked up the C4 she's going to use to blow up the yacht. As Bella plunges into the depths of the ocean, the yacht explodes and Ed dies.
In the water, Bella is reminded of her childhood when her father saved her from drowning.
Before he almost drowns a second time, the coast guard arrives. Fortunately for Bella, Michael survived the shooting and alerted the coast guard while he was in the hospital that he was in trouble.
Bella is saved and returns to land, but her story is not over.
What happens to Bella?
Bella receives 10.2 million insurance money after her yacht is destroyed. She gifts most of it to Lawson's family, who are happy to receive it and give them a note saying, "I'm alive because of your husband."
He didn't give all the money – in the film's closing moments, we hear him say, "I'm not stupid," as he walks into the distance with Michael, presumably to have more adventures with the fallen man. to be in a relationship with someone. But where will his adventures take him? Probably a place away from the ocean that we imagine!
